Savings from the Farmers Market- Bless the California Bounty

by Lee on November 29, 2009

  1. california-fall-bountyOver 20 lbs of persimmons, pomegranates and satsuma mandarin oranges: $25
  2. Opportunity to chat with growers: Priceless

(Prices from the Sacramento Farmers Market)

Apples: Organic $2/lb, Conventional from Apple Hill Patrick’s Garden $1/lb
Pomegranates: $1 – $1.5 /lb, from Bradburn Farm in Madera, CA. I asked the grower why the price difference, and he said just the “size”.
Persimmons: $0.5/lb
Kiwis: $1.25/lb
Satsuma Mandarin Oranges:

  • Conventional: $0.8/lb (5lb), or $0.7/lb (10/lb) from Ariza Farm in Orland, CA. Certified Organic: $1.5/lb (4lb), from S and J Mandarin Grove, in Newcastle, CA. The owners, Steve and June were there, totally nice an personable people. I asked June whether they sell to the Davis Food Co-op – they said “not yet”, and “we’re kinda of small farm”..
  • Taste Test: The ones from S & J have a stronger flavor, while the ones from Ariza are more mushy in texture and slightly less sour. Both are not too sweet but not too sour either – it’s not peak season yet.
  • Sacramento fruit price comparison: Safeway $4.99/5lb, Savemart $5.87/5lb, David Food Co-op (organic) $2.69/lb

Bottom line – for the same amount and quality of fruits purchased from Davis, saved over $25. I’m not counting the carbon foot print of the drive here, since we also enjoyed dimsum in the vicinity :)
