From my trusted and well used copy of Field Guide to Produce :
Early European settlers learned to eat persimmon from Native American tribes, who left the fruit on the tree well into October to ripen it thoroughly and enhance its sweetness (translation – persimmon now is REALLY sweet!). Persimmon’s wild ancestor grew in China, and has long been popular in China, Japan and Koran – it’s Japan’s national fruit.
When ripe, these fruits are extremely sweet. Their Latin name, diospyros, means “food of the gods”. The entire fruit is edible. The bright orange, tomato-shaped Fuyu, can be eaten like an apple and has a sweet, mildly spicy favor.
Price comparison – Sacramento farmers market (shown) $0.75/lb. Yolo Fruit Stand $0.69/lb. Davis Farmers Market $1-$1.5/lb. I haven’t seen these in the traditional grocery stores.
Where do you get your persimmon this month? I know Davis has a lot of persimmon trees at people’s backyard!
